Governance and management of Posidonia beach- dune systems across the Mediterranean
Protecting Posidonia means preserving Mediterranean beaches
POSBEMED 2 develops planning strategies that enhance the value of the Posidonia beach-dune environment and integrate them into the overall coastal strategy, while also addressing concerns and educating stakeholders, based on findings of the previous project (POSBEMED). Furthermore, POSBEMED 2 addresses key knowledge gaps, providing information that will enhance management decisions on adaptation, policies, planning and promotion in Protected Areas.

Tourism is an important driver of our economy, where beaches play an important role. Faced by strong erosion, the Mediterranean coastal landscape is increasingly threatened. The beaches we enjoy every summer could be washed away, causing our tourists to choose other destinations. Maintaining Posidonia on our beaches is a natural solution to stop sand loss. Besides, it helps to maintain crystal-clear waters and protect marine biodiversity. It is an ally of our future. Posidonia is our ally for preserving our coasts, also in highly touristic areas. It is a valuable part of our landscape that we are losing.
Whether as citizens or tourists, we can support Posidonia conservation on our beaches. If you are a government, local administration or institution, you can also commit to preserving Posidonia on the Mediterranean coast.

Why does POSEIDON LEAVE THE SEA IN SEARCH OF HUMANS?
A MANUAL FOR CONSERVING MEDITERRANEAN POSIDONIA BEACHES AND ASSESSING PROGRESS OF MANAGEMENT ACTIONS

Surveys conducted in the previous initiative POSBEMED (2016-2019) funded by the Interreg Mediterranean programme highlighted the need to promote better management of the Posidonia littoral landscape and banquettes on beaches throughout the entire Mediterranean coast. Data gathered about beach management practices revealed that 83% of the surveyed local authorities remove seagrass deposits and banquettes every year on some or all the beaches, including protected areas.
Based on the findings of the previous project, POSBEMED2 catalyses these results to manage the Mediterranean coastline by developing planning strategies that recognize the value of the Posidonia beach-dune environment and integrate them into the overall coastal strategy, while also addressing concerns and educating stakeholders. It further addresses key knowledge gaps, providing information that will enhance management decisions on adaptation, policies, planning and promotion in Protected Areas.
Developed during the project, the common methodology and toolbox for Posidonia beach management in PAs provides improved management measures, protocols to evaluate impacts and monitoring techniques to ensure the intergrity of the Mediterranean landscape.
